INTERVIEW WITH OUR FOUNDER
FOUNDER'S ORIGIN STORY
I grew up in South Labadi’s Otswe Community, where darkness wasn’t just the absence of electricity — it was the absence of a piece of our joy. No tv after school, homework was done under the dim flickering light of a candle, plus the stifling heat! I vividly remember sweating through sleepless nights, bracing for 12 to 24-hour blackouts that shaped our daily rhythm. We didn’t choose energy poverty. We adapted to it. And whenever the lights came back on, it was met with mixed feelings of both relief and anxiety — because we knew its presence was short lived according to the regional load-shedding timetable. That ache stayed with me. It fueled an anger borne from a helplessness I once felt as a child. That anger has become a calling.
Across Africa, energy poverty has quietly sabotaged progress — clinics without power, schools without connectivity, farmers losing harvests for lack of efficient cold storage. And now, climate change is compounding the crisis. This is the moment of convergence — where energy access and climate justice must be solved together. Not someday. Now. Because the cost of waiting is too high. Because Africa is ready — and so are its innovators. My vision is a continent lit by its own brilliance. Where clean energy powers not just clinics and classrooms, but confidence and creativity. Where young technicians equipped with green skills become entrepreneurs. Where villages become models of what’s possible. And when we succeed, the world will see Africa not as a place of need, but as a source of solutions.
WHY MINAGIE ENERGY EXISTS
Because we refuse to accept that a midwife in a community health center in the Afram Plains or anywhere else in Africa must deliver a baby in the dark with the only light source either being a Paraffin Lamp or her phone’s torch. That a farmer must watch his tomatoes rot because the cold store has no power. That a young girl must study beside a kerosene lamp, inhaling fumes just to chase a dream. Africa is not helpless. We can solve Africa’s problems with Africa’s solutions. We are here to prove that this is possible.
